The Badass Character Spotlight: #3

For the third installment of our Badass Character Spotlight, we’re going to shine the light on a character who is brave, bold, tough and fearless. And that character would be…

Mulan.

If you were a child of the late 90s or early 00s, chances are good that you grew up watching Mulan, and are probably a better person for it. One of the first few Disney movies that revolved around a kickass, no-man-required female heroine, Mulan was a character who could do whatever she set her mind to, and she chose to risk her life for the good of others.

She loved her father so much that she pretended to be a boy and went to war for him, and then proved herself to be an MVP with her amazing skills. She defied the rigid roles and rules of gender, and even after she was discovered to be a girl, she still managed to save the emperor of China from certain death. It doesn’t get more badass than that.

(Not to mention the fact that she sings one of Disney’s arguably best songs.)

Mulan is a character who is clever and cleverly-designed, subversive in so many ways, someone who balks at stereotypes and labels, and crushes expectations in glorious fashion. And for that, we salute her.
